True faith manifests itself through our actions.

Francis Chan

The doorbell rang around six o’clock that evening, and Ben wearily dragged himself from his office. Peeking through the window, he spied Molly. He unlocked, opened the door, and wrapped her in his arms. “Molly! Why didn’t you tell me when you were flying in? I’d have come to get you at the airport.” He stepped back.

“Nonsense. I needed to rent a car anyway. Maybe Monday you can help me buy a new one, so I can return this rental.”

“I’d love to. Come on in.” He grabbed her bags. “That’s it?”

“I’ve had to live lightly for many years. Mum and Dad have some boxes of mine that I’ve instructed them to ship to you. Might take a while for it all to get here.”

“I can’t believe you’re here. You could have texted or called to let me know you were on the way, at least. What if I’d been out?” He closed the door.

“Like where? On a date? Are you dating again?” Molly shrugged off her coat.

“Well, I did have lunch with someone today. I doubt it’ll go anywhere.”

“How’s Jo?”

Benjamin sat in a chair and motioned for her to join him. “Jo is healing well. She’s been coming to church. We’ve talked about the past and cleared the air. We’re good.”

“Then why are you dating someone else?”

“Excuse me?”

“Take Jo out.”

Benjamin shook his head. “You’re nuts. Even if she has forgiven me, that doesn’t mean she could ever trust me again.”

“You can’t trust her.” Molly’s voice was soft. “Yet you still love her.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“I beg to differ. But big sister is here to take care of you, Benny.” She hopped to her feet. “Where’s my room, and how soon can we get dinner?”

Benjamin reluctantly rose and took her to the spare room that would be hers. “I made sure you had a desk in here, so you could work from home if you wanted to. My internet is great.”

“Still no big-screen TV?”

“I tried to cut out distractions. Just a little one in the kitchen to catch the news is all I need. Sometimes I’ll watch a show on my laptop. Since it’s just me, it’s not as if I require a huge monitor on the wall for that.”

“Now that I’m here, that might change.”

He chuckled. “I expect a lot of things will change with you around.”

“I’m like a whirlwind.”

“True. What are you in the mood for?”

“Chinese. I heard there’s a great place on Appleton Avenue. I checked the reviews online.”

“You heard right. How much time do you need?”

“Fifteen minutes?”

“I’ll be ready. And Molly?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m glad you’re here.”

“Don’t get too excited. Mum and Dad said either we both come home for Christmas or they’ll come here.”

Ben dropped his jaw but recovered quickly. “Oh, no. Really?”

“They aren’t that bad.” She winked. “I’ll be out in a few.”

The door closed, and Ben went to clean up and shut down his computer until Monday. It would be great having his sister in town.

Jo finished her night shift and scooted home to shower and change before church.
